Because We’re Far Apart And My Lonely Heart Finds It Hard To Get Through The Night

Slow Club— Christmas TV

I discovered this jam back in April, but it’s continued to receive heavy rotation deep into the fall and winter. It was the first song I’d heard from these Brits, and subsequently the precursor to falling super-hard for any and all material I’ve heard from them. But like most great love stories, it really all goes back to the seed, doesn’t it?

It’s a song about hope, mistletoe, love, and telling the ones who need to know. It is the phone call to say, “You are the parade of Christmas lights that swirl around my heart, and I believe that our love is still out there for exploration.” It is the simple and lovely act of caring for someone, in a very real way. Things don’t always turn out the way we want, but that doesn’t keep us from enduring, from loving, from wishing, especially on this night, as the silvery snow and impeccable evening skyline twinkles and fades— just come one home…

ZAZA— Sooner Or Later

This New York based duo sure know how to craft some sexy ass jams. Which they seem totally aware of, as their My Space headline reads, “Music to make out to.” And they’re not lying. Case in point, “Sooner Or Later,” which exudes a level of darkness that’s not quite black, but defiantly a darker shade of gray—the perfect audio nightcap to an evening filled with bad decisions, made with people that probably aren’t yours.

I Might Be Dreaming, But I Think I Believe

As we walked down the launch pad, the pace at which the screws in my stomach moved right quickened, increasing with each step — tighter, tighter, tighter.

Passing through the hatch of the rocket my dreams were coming to fruition. I’d only left myself one betrayal; launch day, and still I hadn’t told her. We ran through the pre-launch checklist twice, received the green light from mission control and the countdown began— ten, nine, eight…..

The medal cylinder exploded into the clouds and I felt the weight of the earth pressing into my chest as the thrusters shook our bodies with the veracity of an earthquake in the sky. This must be what war sounds like.

I reached for the hand attached to the body strapped in directly to my right, and battling the G-force slowly turned to face the head attached to it. The glair from her helmet, as well as the intense turbulence made it difficult for my pupils to focus, my eyes felt like they had Parkinson’s disease. Adjusting, my eyes finally found hers and I could see her Grand Canyon smile facing back at me, brighter than Christmas morning.

As my mouth fought to make the shape of the words, her eyes giggled and she moved her index finger to my suite, forming letters out across my chest.

Her handwriting looked like love.

Telekinesis is the musical outfit of one incredibly talented chap named Michael Benjamen Lerner. Dude knows how to write a catchy tune. But currently more pressing than the amazing eleven song record of awesomeness, is the bands Daytrotter session—which I’ve been waiting for since March—but lord has it been worth the wait!

The Daytrotter version of “Calling All Doctors” has been kicking around my stereo the last few weeks, and I’m hooked. The original captivated my heart from first listen, but now this version…well, it has me falling hard too—I can’t decide between the two! It’s like falling in love with fraternal twins. But I know this is gonna work out.

Compare and contrast the magic for yourself…

Album version:

Daytrotter:

Telekinesis— Calling All Doctors (Daytrotter Session)

Back to the smorgasbord of radical that is the Telekinesis full length. Since it’s release in April it has taken up permanent residency in my speakers. It’s one of those rare records which is so good that every few days your brain fights with itself to decide which songs is it’s favorite. If you get a chance to see  MBL and company live, you really should take it, it will be one of the loveliest musical evenings you’ll experience, plus how often do you get to see a band where the drummer also the lead singer? Never, that’s when! Or at least not since the 1974 Genesis tour, but we’re not counting that.

Currently my brains favorite from the record.
